Last weekend we had dinner at Barrio on Seventh Avenue and Third Street. The food was yummy, the decor was pretty, it was kid-friendly, Tom had a watermelon drink that smelled like a Jolly Rancher, Molly ate two orders of green peas. Whatever. I'm not a food critic.
I just wanted to tell you that our waiter looked exactly like Lloyd Dobler. Ladies, you know who I'm talking about. Lloyd Dobler. He was very sweet, too. Attentive and adorable - what more could you want?
So there you go. Barrio. Five stars. Don't say I never did anything for you.

Do they have a waitress that looks like Diane Court? If so, I'm on my way.
Hmmm, I didn't see one, but you never know . . . maybe it was her night off. ;-)
You're doing just fine. This is how food critics get started.
Here are some thoughts from Gael Greene, longtime New York Magazine food critic, speaking in this week's issue, an elegy to the magazine's first editor, Clay Felker:
"I didn't have the credentials to tell chefs who had been cooking since they were 14 that there was something wrong with their sauce. But what I could do as a newspaper reporter, which I had been, was to say who, why, what, when, where. I wrote the sociology of New York restaurants. One of his ideas was how to beat the menu rap. [Felker] wanted me to go to all the great restaurants, expensive restaurants, and see if you could order a salad or soup and not be thrown out. How cheap could you be and be treated decently in these snob French restaurants?"

I liked Barrio, too. I took note that when we went, there were around 20 kids in the restaurant, none of them throwing fits of any kind.
I had the plantain and black bean empanada appetizer, which hit the spot. I need to go back when I'm hungry enough for an entree.
There was a line of about 3 groups waiting to get in when we left, which must have been around 6:30 or 7.
